  • General Information

    • Permits are required 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to ascend the Sub Dome or Half Dome Cables
    • Day use permits are available only through lotteries operated by
    • Day use permits are not available through any office in Yosemite National Park
    • Day use permits are intended for visitors who complete the hike to Half Dome in one calendar day and do not spend a night camping in the Yosemite Wilderness
    • Overnight use permits are available at Wilderness Centers in Yosemite. For more information on overnight use go to:
    • Daily lottery applications are accepted from 12:01 AM PST to 1:00 PM PST two days in advance of the intended hiking date
    • A non-refundable application fee of $10 will be charged for each lottery application
    • Lottery applicants may request up to 6 permits
    • A $10 permit fee will be charged for each permit reserved
    • Multiple applications by the same person to the same lottery will be voided without refund of the application fee
    • Applicants must use their legal name when applying to a lottery and show a matching government issued identification at the permit check point
    • Ascending the Sub Dome or Half Dome Cables without a permit is a violation of 36 CFR 1.6 - engaging in a permitted activity without a permit and is punishable by a fine of up to $5000 and/or 6 months in jail


    • Permits may be cancelled with full refund of the $10 permit fee any time prior to 9 PM PST the day before the hiking date
    • Please check the weather and consider cancelling your permit if foul weather is in the forecast
