Trail Running Shoes vs. Hiking Boots

by Rebecca Gonzalez, Girls Who Hike Texas Ambassador

What do you prefer for a hike? I wondered myself recently and posted a poll to the GWHTX Facebook Page recently asking the same question. By a very wide margin, the girls selected the hiking boots over trail running shoes.

I have been a runner-turned trail runner-turned hiker, so I fall in the “trail running shoes” camp. I do have hiking boots, but I use them mostly for camping trips with my sons Boy Scout Troop. The trail running shoes (I wear these from New Balance) are lighter and more flexible to me. Although the trails I take are generally rough, they are cleared enough that I am not going over heavy terrain all the time.

These two articles really help break down the difference between trail runners and hiking boots. Ultimately, it's up to you!
