A Guide to Osprey Backpacks
By Bianca Ceballos, Girls Who Hike Florida Ambassador
We all reach that point in the growth of our hiking experience where we want to find the perfect hiking pack for ourselves. Of course, a simple google search will result in many options, so I’d like to give a little bit of my personal opinion on what I believe to be a great choice. I remember after looking through many forums and reading about several peoples experience that there is one brand that you can’t go wrong with, and that is Osprey!
Aside from Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee* which I can personally vouch for, Osprey also has an assortment of options to choose from! From a quick trail daily pack, to a large 75+ liter pack for several weeks through the trails, Osprey has all you need! I think another great quirk is some packs even come with a water bladder included which can range from a 1.5L to a 3L bladder that conveniently fits into any of their packs. You truly cannot go wrong with Osprey backpacks.
Now in terms of where to get some Osprey packs, I think the best option is going to your local REI (or local hiking/outdoors store) and feeling out the packs there. REI does a great job at providing weighted bags and things to fill your pack so you can get a real feel as to how your pack will feel with all the weight of the supplies you would take on your hikes or trips. The employees at REI can also provide personal knowledge in helping you pick the right pack for yourself, and will even measure you so you can pick a properly sized pack. Once you know your size and have an idea on what you may want, the best thing to do is either search for used packs on craigslist/OfferUp, or find the packs a bit cheaper than REI on amazon. In this case you now have a feel for the pack and know the exact specs so a quick amazon search will leave you with no doubts or worries in your choice.
Currently I own 3 Osprey packs. My biggest pack is a 46L Kyte which is great for a weekend camping trip to a week long hike. My second pack is an 18L Hikelite daily pack which is great for the many GWH meetups that we have monthly, and also great for a commuter bag to work or on flights. My last bag is a 15L Syncro pack which has an attachment to hold your helmet after bike commutes! Honestly there’s a pack for anything, and the packs are great quality! All my packs also come with a built in rain cover to keep the pack dry in case of a sudden down pour which is honestly more handy than you’d expect! I really cannot praise these packs enough, they really our worth it and last for years to come.
So go on out there and do your research, I am sure you will find exactly what you’re looking for with Osprey. I hope this helps, and enjoy those hikes !
