Meet the #GWHAmbassadors - Nicole Brown
Hello! My name is Nicole Brown and I am twenty-four years old. I am one of the GWH Ohio Ambassadors for 2018. I grew up in Elyria, Ohio until I was about sixteen years old. I moved to Virginia with my parents until last year. I lived in Virginia for six years. Virginia was not the place for me and I always dreamed of returning to my home state. I met my now husband and I brought him to Ohio a couple times to meet my family and see the state. He loved it. We moved to Ohio together in 2016 and it was the best decision we could have made. I have a one-year old puppy named Kimber. She is a shih tzu / dachshund mix. She loves to hike with me but only up to three miles because she begins to get tired since she has such short legs.
I joined GWHOH in November 2017. In 2017, I had a lot going on in my life. I graduated in March, bought a house with my then-fiance, got married, and adopted a puppy. By November, things were starting to slow down and I realized I needed to find a hobby that I would enjoy and maybe meet new friends. I hadn’t hiked for years but I was determined to find a hiking group on Facebook. I joined a couple but when I was scrolling through Girls Who Hike Ohio’s page, they were looking for ambassadors. I decided to read up on it and figured why not just apply. I had the time to blog, make monthly hiking meetups, and be interactive on the Facebook page. I honestly didn’t think they would give me the position since I had just joined the group and I was honest about being a beginner hiker. When I found out that I was offered one of the three ambassadors position, I was so excited. This gave me motivation and the commitment I needed to start hiking whenever I had a chance. I didn’t know the Akron area very well since we had just moved there last summer but I was determined to hike new trails. When I joined GWHOH in November, the group only had around 100 members. Since then, I’ve watched it grow to over 1000 members. THAT IS INSANE AND SO EXCITING. In four months, I saw the interaction in the group increase immensely. Women are constantly posting and communicating with each other. I have my second official hike in two days and I seriously cannot wait. I love meeting all the women and getting to know them. I love meeting all the beginner hikers to the professional ones. I love seeing how each woman is so different yet we all come together to do one thing and that is to hike. I feel like I have a found a true hobby in this group and I am so thankful. When I’m at work, all I can think about is where I am going to hike this weekend and that makes me so happy. I used to dread the weekend because I wouldn’t have much going on unless it was summer and then I would go fishing or kayaking but that was it. I am extremely grateful and amazed to be apart of this group. I cannot wait to explore more trails and meet more amazing women!! Happy Hiking.
