Meet Our #GWHAmbassadors: Candice Cravins
Meet Girls Who Hike AL ambassador, Candice!
Name: Candice Cravins
Hometown/Current Home: I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. I’ve lived in Idaho, Utah, and Texas, and currently call Mobile, Alabama home!
What chapter are you an Ambassador for?: (Southern) Alabama!
How long have you been apart of Girls Who Hike?: I joined the organization in October 2017, and took on the role of Ambassador in January 2018!
How did you find the Girls Who Hike organization?: I am a member of the Alabama Outdoor Adventurer Group on Facebook, and found out about GWH through a post made within the group.
What made you want to become a Girls Who Hike Ambassador?: I have always loved the outdoors, and getting to know the area trails is always one of the first things on my list upon moving to any new place. I enjoy solo hiking and backpacking, and have been slowly exploring the state on my own since moving here in 2016. I wanted to become a GWH Ambassador because I thought it would be a great way to make new friends and share my love of the outdoors with other like-minded women!
How did you get into hiking?: I feel the most “at home” when I am outdoors, and have made it a point to connect with nature on a daily basis from a very young age. I love hiking because it’s something that I can do on my own, no matter where I might be, and gives me the opportunity to decompress and release the stress that comes with everyday life. I love being surrounded by nature, and seeing parts of the world that are only accessible by foot.
What's your favorite thing about spending time in the outdoors?: The peace and quiet, the feelings of gratitude for the beautiful world we live in, appreciation for the small things all around us, and the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish up a great hike.
List three things you can't go hiking without: Sunglasses (if I ever don’t have my sunglasses, it’s gonna be a bad day for me!), iPhone, and my favorite snack – coffee RXBAR whole food protein bars!
What do you love the most about being a Girls Who Hike Ambassador?: I love being able to connect with other women who share my love for the outdoors, both on and off the trails, in a safe, welcoming, non-judgmental space. I am so excited to lead my first meetup this month at St. Stephens Historical Park, and to get more ladies in my region involved in the organization!
What advice would you give ladies who are new to hiking?: Start slow, be patient with yourself, and don’t think you have to trek 10 miles out and back up a big mountain to be considered a “hiker!” Don't be afraid to ask questions, and take advantage of free learning opportunities and resources in your area.
