Member of GWHLA for: One year
Found GWHLA: Searched on google for all girls hiking group and this was the first and most fun one to come up!
I wanted to be an ambassador because I love this group and would be so proud and honored to represent it. I think everyone has a story to tell and a battle to fight, and I hope that as an ambassador and through sharing my story I might be able to encourage and inspire girls to find healing through hiking like I did.
My dad originally taught me about hiking, but I didn’t really get into it in a serious sense as an adult until about a year ago when I was sexually assaulted. I read a book called “Girl in the Woods” by Aspen Matis, and in it she says “I journeyed into the wild in search of my innocence lost”. So I started hiking, and found this group, and then I found myself again.
I love being outdoors because of the peace and beauty that is found in nature, I love looking up at a mountain before climbing it, and then looking back up at it again after climbing it and reminding myself of how much stronger I am for having done it.
Three things I can’t go hiking without: My dog, Gummy Tummy Penguins from TJ’s, 10 essentials (does that count as one?) if not - my first aid kit.
I think the best part is knowing that I’m representing a community of fantastic, strong, and inspiring women.
Advice I would give to women who are new to hiking: You are stronger than you believe.
