This trail can be a bit slippery due to snow, ice, and wet conditions. This makes for slow and careful hiking on the way down from the overlook. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for us, but be prepared for muddy conditions if it has rained a few days prior.

I did not have cell phone reception or Wi-Fi service in the park until I reached the overlook.

To complete this hike, I highly recommend bringing snacks, 2 - 3 L of water, and your 10 essentials. I have not yet completed this hike, but from what I have read the trail may not be well marked and could be overgrown in parts. Because of this I would recommend wearing clothing that covers the full length of your legs. I hope to complete this trail prior to our scheduled date. I will provide additional information at that time. Alternatively, if anyone in our group has been on this trail, I welcome hearing about your experiences.

Additional Note: Dolly Sods was used for bombing training back during WWII and there are still live rounds scattered throughout the wilderness. If you find any, take note of where it was - DO NOT TOUCH IT - and call authorities when you can.

This hike is open to hikers of all skill levels. We’ll be hiking as a group, and nobody will be left behind or forgotten.

West Virginia - White Oak / Cranny's Crow

Address: 321 Park Drive, Mathias, WV 26812
Date/Time: Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 10AM

This event is hosted by Girls Who Hike Ambassador Sharon Jones. The first few attendees will receive special Girls Who Hike giveaways before the hike starts.

White Oak Trail to Cranny Crow Overlook
Lost River State Park
3.1 miles out and back
Total Elevation Gain: 954 feet

For more information visit:

https://wvstateparks.com/park/lost-river-state-park

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/white-oak-trail-to-cranny-crow-overlook

Meeting Location/Time: Meet in the parking area for the horse stables inside the state park near the trailhead at 9:45AM. Hike will start at 10AM.

Trail Rating: Green (Mellow hike, easy to follow, elevation gain of 1,000 ft and under, low altitude. Novice hikers welcome.)

Side note #1: When I scouted this trail it was a bit slippery due to snow, ice, and wet conditions. This makes for slow and careful hiking on the way down from the overlook. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for us, but be prepared for muddy conditions if it has rained a few days prior.

Side note #2: I had no cell phone reception or Wi-Fi connection in the park until I was at the overlook.
Please note: In order to attend an official meetup, you MUST have a signed Liability Waiver on file. It takes less than a minute to complete and covers you for all future official Girls Who Hike meetups.
