Pennsylvania - Mt. Minsi

This hike is led by GWH ambassador Beverly Atkinson

There's only a couple more months of hiking left for the year. So, take advantage of the brisk weather and join a GWH hike before it's snow and ice again! I'll be hiking Mt. Minsi Sunday, October 28th. Mt. Minsi is about a 5 mile round trip hike. with about 1000ft elevation. This is a moderate hike since there is some rocky and steep terrain but totally doable for beginner hikers. I'll be taking the main trail up and there's an option of taking the main road or the fire road back down.

Here are some helpful links about this trail.

Pennsylvania - Glen Onoko Falls and Lehigh Gorge Overlook

Date: June 24th, 2018
Time: 09:00am Meetup 09:15am Departure
Distance: 3.7 miles
Elevation Gain: 1003ft
Location: Lehigh Gorge Trail, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229

This is a Girl’s Who Hike Official event hosted by Beverly Atkinson. The trail for my June GWHPA meetup will be Glen Onoko Falls and Lehigh Gorge Overlook trail located in Jim Thorpe, PA. This is going to be a good one. Glen Onoko is such a beautiful place with multiple gorgeous waterfalls. The trail is 3.7 miles long with an elevation gain of 1003ft. This trail is very rocky. In some places you will be basically climbing up rocks so it can be considered fairly strenuous. This hike will also be slippery, as there will be wet rocks. Please be aware of this when choosing the proper footwear. This is a very popular trail so it will most likely be crowded. There are multiple places to park along the road to the trail head. In order to get closest to the trailhead drive all the way down until you cross over a wooden bridge. The parking area is large and loops around but the trail head is right after the wooden bridge. This is where I will be at 9:00am for a 9:15am departure.

This hike is rated Yellow by the GWH rating system
YELLOW: Moderate hike,well-signed, elevation gain of between 1,000-2,000ft., low altitude. Novice hikers welcome!
But please be aware of the rocky conditions climbing up which will make this hike more strenuous than expected.

Pennsylvania - Thousand Steps

Location: 14251 William Penn Hwy, Mapleton, PA 17052

Date/Time: Saturday, March 10th, 2018/ 10:00am Meetup with a 10:15am Start Time

This event is hosted by Girls Who Hike Ambassador Beverly Atkinson.

If you’re looking to get a leg workout in, this is the hike for you. Saturday March 10th GWHPA will be hosting a hike at Thousand Steps near Mt. Union, PA. This hike is an out and back 3.5 mile long trail with an elevation gain of 1003 feet. And just like the name implies, this hike’s elevation is in the form of, you guessed it, STEPS. And let me tell you, these stairs are no joke. But don’t let that stop you from coming out, because once you get to the top the view is amazing!

The GWH trail rating system rates this hike as YELLOW:
Moderate hike, well-signed, elevation gain of between 1,000-2,000ft., low altitude. Novice hikers welcome!

This hike might be slightly more strenuous than expected. I would suggest taking some time to properly warm up before this hike (especially if you are coming from a distance like me) since the stairs will be the first thing you do. Trekking poles can be useful for this hike, especially if you have bad knees or ankles. You can follow the link below for more information on this hike.
