There are six lakes in the park, three of them named for the children of Frederick Miller of the famed Miller Brewing Co, numerous small ponds and a variety of wildlife such as deer, black bear, beaver, loons and moose. Craig Lake is 374 acres and features six islands and high granite bluffs along its northern shoreline. In keeping with the Miller beer theme, a nearby lake located northwest of the park, is named High Life Lake.

We will keep an eye on the weather and give gear/clothing recommendations as it gets closer.

Trail Description:
When complete, the Paul Henry - Thornapple Trail will be a 42-mile, multi-use recreation trail, extending from Grand Rapids to Vermontville; it eventually may be extended to Jackson. The trail is being constructed on or near a former railroad corridor. Some sections have been completed, while others are either in development or proposal stage.

The trail passes through farmlands, woodlands and small towns, coursing along and over rivers and creeks. Indeed, some people call it the most beautiful rail trial in Michigan. Part of its beauty is its proximity to the Thornapple River.

Currently, paved sections of the trail include 2.5 miles through the heart of Kentwood. The southern 1.25 miles in Kentwood (Wing to Stauffer) runs through a rural area. The northern spur (Stauffer to Kalamazoo/44th) runs through neighborhoods and commercial sections of Kentwood.

Three and a half miles of the Paul Henry - Thornapple Trail is paved between Middleville and Irving. Kent County Parks hopes to have another mile paved by the end of summer 2011, which will complete the paving between Dutton and Caledonia.

The Thornapple Trail Association anticipates opening another trail section in 2012, linking Caledonia to Middleville, as well as paving a section through Hastings.

For the most up-to-date information on the progress of this trail, or to get involved with this trail's development, visit the Thornapple Trail Association.

Any updates will be posted on the event thread and I’ll update the event description if anything changes.

Trail description:
The best place to learn and study about Michigan's amazing sand dunes is at P. J. Hoffmaster State Park, where you can combine a visit to the Gillette Visitor Center, Michigan’s Sand Dune Interpretive Center, with a hike through the various life zones of a dune along the Homestead Trail.

The Gillette Visitor Center was built in 1976 as a bicentennial project to serve as an interpretive center to the state’s most noted natural treasure. The two-story center is literally overshadowed by a huge, windblown dune that can be viewed from a glass wall on the west side of the lobby.

Beginning from the visitor center parking lot is this 2.7-mile loop known as the Homestead Trail.

The Homestead Trail circuit may look rugged, but the climbs are moderate.

Most of the trail passes through a designated Natural Area and includes possible side trips to a Quiet Area, the park’s most remote corner. You also climb up a long stairway to magnificent views from the Dune Overlook Platform.

Summer is an ideal time for this hike, when you can stop for a swim in the Great Lake, but it’s also the park’s busiest season. Many like to come here in spring or fall when the crowds are gone and there’s nothing on the beaches but sand, driftwood, and a bootprint or two.
