Florida - Miccosukee Greenway

This hike is led by GWH Ambassador Sally Uptagrafft!

The Miccosukee Greenway trail is a natural oasis with an urban landscape and offers diverse terrain that is good for all skill levels.
From flat and open to hilly, wooded and twisty, this trail cuts through groves of hardwood and pine with intermittent pastures which offer a change of scenery. While the trail is a beautiful, quick escape right in the middle of Tallahassee, it is also a living historical and archaelogical exhibit. The trail sits on land preserved from old plantations, and initially provided pasture for cattle as well as grounds for quail hunting.

We will do a 6-mile out and back hike starting at the Fleishmann Road trailhead. We'll go all the way to the Thornton Road trailhead and head back.

Florida - Garden of Eden Trail

This hike is led by GWH Ambassador Christienne Adrick!

Garden of Eden is a 3.75-mile trail that takes you through an enchanting area that local legend claims is the original Garden of Eden. Beginning in longleaf pine/wiregrass uplands, the trail soon skirts the top of a dramatic steephead ravine, descends steeply through the slope forest to cross a seepage stream and then ascends the slope forest back to sandhills. The trail eventually opens to a spectacular view at Alum Bluff. At 135 feet above the Apalachicola River, Alum Bluff is the largest natural geological exposure in Florida.

Please note: This trail is considered challenging by Florida standards due to steep ascents and descents.

Parking at the trailhead is limited—please carpool if you are able to do so! The Nature Conservancy does not charge a day use fee, but there is an Iron Ranger for donations. I highly recommend that you bring some cash to help preserve this beautiful habitat and trail.

Additionally, The Nature Conservancy does NOT allow dogs in this area. Please leave them at home!

This trail is a part of the Florida Trailwalker Program (https://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Florida-Forest-Service/Recreation/Hiking/Florida-Trailwalker-Trail-List-by-State-Forest)
It is also the smallest loop that composes a larger loop totalling about 46 miles, that people often backpack camp! It is a very popular backpacking loop for florida. and some of the longer loops even have caves, so i figured this would be a good way to get aquainted with the area, offer a hike that is not too challenging for begginers, while introducing to the possibility of pushing forward in the future on to the other parts of the trail.

Florida - Leon Sinks Geological Area

This event is led by GWH Ambassador Christienne Adrick!

Leon Sinks Geological Area is underlain by a layer of limestone, eroded and dissolved by rainwater and groundwater to form caverns, holes, and tunnels in the limestone. This type of terrain is called "karst" and results in many geological features such as wet sinkholes, depressions, natural bridges, and a disappearing stream. Black Rock Beach is one of my favorite beaches in Florida! This will be less about hiking and more about exploring one of the natural wonders of Florida. This event is open to children since it's a beautiful beach playground they'll enjoy. There will be a very short half mile hike from the parking lot though a shaded trail to arrive at the beach itself. Once we arrive we'll explore Boneyard Beach where old trees have fallen on the beach and have been bleached by the sun and salt water. Then we'll retrace our steps to Black Rock where we can explore the black rock itself which is acutally compressed sand and decayed leaves. I guestimate we'll do around 3 miles of walking exploring this beautiful beach. Please bring $3 for parking at the trailhead.

Please be sure to bring at least 2 liters of water per person and lots of sunblock. There is no shade on the beach, so sun protection is important.

The Garden of Eden Trail is a 4 mile trail that will lead us on a hike down into ravines, dense forest canopy, up into longleaf pine uplands, and around to an overlook of the Apalachicola River. One of the most unique places in Florida, this trail explores some of the rarest freshwater habitats on earth. We'll have a chance to see one of the grandest views in Florida.

Please take note that this trail is considered difficult due to steep ascents and descents. However, we will take our time enjoying this beautiful place, so please come join us regardless of skill level.

Because the parking lot at the trailhead is so limited, please carpool to the trail head if you can. The Nature Conservancy also asks for a donation to help preserve this beautiful habitat and trail so bring a few bucks with you for donation.

Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park boasts miles of trails in a beautiful forest located in Tallahassee. This trail meanders through dense, almost jungle-like, forests, pine forests, walks along a beautiful clear stream, and out to an overlook of Lake Jackson. While this trail is suitable for all skill levels this park does surprise you with a couple of steep hills! Come join us!

For more trail information please visit: https://floridahikes.com/phippspark

This hike is open to all skill levels, but be prepared with lot of water, snacks, bug spray, and sunblock, as we all know Florida is hot and buggy in September!

Any updates will be posted on the event thread via the pinned post, and I'll update the event description if anything changes!
