Florida - Providence Canyon State Park

This meetup has been rescheduled from the canceled event on October 19th! Join the Tallahassee ambassadors for their final event of the 2019 Girls Who Hike™ FL season.
_____________________________________________

Join GWHFL Ambassadors Christienne Adrick and Sally Uptagrafft at Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin, Georgia!

Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” is a testament to the power of man’s influence on the land. Massive gullies as deep as 150 feet were caused by poor farming practices during the 1800s. Today, they make some of the prettiest photographs within the state. The canyon soil’s pink, orange, red and purple hues make a beautiful, natural painting at this park gem.

Florida - Guided Flashlight Tour

This meetup is led by GWH Ambassador Christienne Adrick!

Please note: This meetup is restricted to 4 people due to limited parking and tour availability. In order to maximize our chances of being on the first available tour as a group, an Eventbrite ticket is REQUIRED to attend this event. Eventbrite access and instructions can be found below. RSVPing YES to the Facebook event does NOT guarantee your spot at this event.

Florida Caverns State Park
Cool air, the sound of dripping water, a visual array of mystifying stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and draperies–this is what greets visitors when they explore the otherworldly depths of Florida Caverns.

Guided Flashlight Tour
Due to the power outage, every visitor participating in the cave tour will need a flashlight. A limited number of flashlights will be provided but must be returned at the end of the tour. Visitors will have the option to buy a Florida Caverns State Park monogrammed flashlight, at a discounted price, if bought from the gift shop at the time of the cave tour ticket purchase. Arrive early, cave tickets may sell out in advance.

What to Expect
Tours depart near the Visitor Center where visitors learn the safety precautions that are needed to participate, including having to stoop many times to pass through areas with a ceiling height of 4 1/2 feet for distances as far as 15 feet in length, narrow passages, 50 descending steps (possibly 50 ascending if the tour is modified due to high water conditions), slippery walkways, and the importance of not touching anything inside the fragile cave environment.

Visitors will walk 350 feet to the cave entrance and down 35 steps using a handrail. When entering the caverns, it will take a few moments to become acclimated to the dimly-lit environment and year-round 65-degree temperature. The tour moves at a leisurely pace through a dozen cave rooms where the visitors are verbally guided through the cave's history, early uses, and interesting geological formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flowstones. Visitors may occasionally encounter some of the animals that call the cave home such as bats, mice, cave crickets, salamanders, cave spiders and the occasional snake or frog.

As the tour concludes, visitors ascend a 15-degree walkway to emerge into a hardwood forest and enjoy a self-paced walk back to the Visitor Center.

Florida - Miccosukee Greenway

This hike is led by GWH Ambassador Sally Uptagrafft!

The Miccosukee Greenway trail is a natural oasis with an urban landscape and offers diverse terrain that is good for all skill levels.
From flat and open to hilly, wooded and twisty, this trail cuts through groves of hardwood and pine with intermittent pastures which offer a change of scenery. While the trail is a beautiful, quick escape right in the middle of Tallahassee, it is also a living historical and archaelogical exhibit. The trail sits on land preserved from old plantations, and initially provided pasture for cattle as well as grounds for quail hunting.

We will do a 6-mile out and back hike starting at the Fleishmann Road trailhead. We'll go all the way to the Thornton Road trailhead and head back.

Florida - Garden of Eden Trail

This hike is led by GWH Ambassador Christienne Adrick!

Garden of Eden is a 3.75-mile trail that takes you through an enchanting area that local legend claims is the original Garden of Eden. Beginning in longleaf pine/wiregrass uplands, the trail soon skirts the top of a dramatic steephead ravine, descends steeply through the slope forest to cross a seepage stream and then ascends the slope forest back to sandhills. The trail eventually opens to a spectacular view at Alum Bluff. At 135 feet above the Apalachicola River, Alum Bluff is the largest natural geological exposure in Florida.

Please note: This trail is considered challenging by Florida standards due to steep ascents and descents.

Parking at the trailhead is limited—please carpool if you are able to do so! The Nature Conservancy does not charge a day use fee, but there is an Iron Ranger for donations. I highly recommend that you bring some cash to help preserve this beautiful habitat and trail.

Additionally, The Nature Conservancy does NOT allow dogs in this area. Please leave them at home!

The hike passes high above Jerry Branch as well as Disappearing Creek, a beautiful clear creek that cuts a narrow canyon and cascades into a 25-foot wall of rock. Continuing on, hikers will cross Crooked Branch and then climbs to the highest bluff on the Suwannee River. From this perch, you may look out over the top of the trees on the opposite bank and peer down on the historic Suwannee below. Hiking down the river, the trail passes numerous rock outcrops 20 and 30 feet above the river along with beautiful white sandbars, offering great places to take a break. Near the end of the hike, participants will cross the Suwannee on the old 129 Truss bridge and have the option to visit the ruins of the historic Suwannee mineral spring before they finish.

This trail is a part of the Florida Trailwalker Program (https://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Florida-Forest-Service/Recreation/Hiking/Florida-Trailwalker-Trail-List-by-State-Forest)
It is also the smallest loop that composes a larger loop totalling about 46 miles, that people often backpack camp! It is a very popular backpacking loop for florida. and some of the longer loops even have caves, so i figured this would be a good way to get aquainted with the area, offer a hike that is not too challenging for begginers, while introducing to the possibility of pushing forward in the future on to the other parts of the trail.
