California Central Coast - Walk Like MADD

Walk Like MADD - a fundraising 5K walk for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador Susan Adamich!

2019 Ventura County Walk Like MADD 5K

This event is dedicated to Chris Prewitt, my friend and classmate whose life was tragically cut short.

Why We Walk: CHRIS PREWITT
Home City: Ventura, California
Crash Anniversary: April 06, 2014
On the early morning of April 6th, 2014, Chris Prewitt was jogging, training for a marathon, along the side of Victoria Avenue between the cities of Ventura and Oxnard. His goal was to run 16 miles that morning, come home to his wife and daughter, and spend the day with them. Tragically, he never came home. Chris was struck and killed by a driver who was operating her vehicle under the influence of xanex and marijuana. A choice was made, and that choice took another person’s life.
Chris Prewitt was a figure-head in the community of Ventura-- a coach, a teacher, a vice principal, but most importantly, he was a husband and father. He was known for his kind heart, his tenacity to work with students and athletes to ensure their success, and he was a dear friend to many. Not only was Chris heavily involved with his community, and beloved by those who worked with him, but Chris was also a loving husband and incredible father. Erin and Izzy were the two people that this tragedy struck the hardest. The loss of a husband and father is one that no family should have to shoulder, and the senseless loss of his life is one that they have to wake to, every day, for the rest of their days. We share Chris’s story in hopes that it serves as a cautionary tale to those that hear it. That we can help end the vicious cycle of senseless decisions involving drugs, drinking and driving, which leads to the loss of innocent life. That one decision can result in another’s loss, taking away something irreplaceable.

Trail Rating: It’s a run/walk on city sidewalks, but if it was a hike it would be rated GREEN: Mellow hike, easy to follow, elevation gain of 1,000ft. and under, low altitude. Novice hikers welcome! 2L of water required.

California Central Coast - Cathedral Lakes Trail in Yosemite

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador Jenny Kotlyar!

This is the 2nd hike in the Yosemite series. The 1st hike is to Clouds Rest:https://www.facebook.com/events/255701601808605/ Joining both is not required.

The trail is fairly steep, rising 1,000 feet in about 3.5 miles. The trail is also located at high elevation, so the air is thinner, possibly causing those that are not acclimated to the elevation to tire faster, and fatigue. The view upon arrival is worth every bit of work it takes to get there. Cathedral Peak rises beyond a pristine alpine lake. Alongside the lake, a beautiful meadow filled with wildflowers adds color to this amazing landscape. It is truly a paradise.

California Central Coast - Clouds Rest via Tenaya Lake in Yosemite

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador Jenny Kotlyar!

The best place to enjoy the view of Half Dome from the top. Cloud's Rest, a massive granite formation just northeast of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, is famous for its very high degree of visual prominence in the valley as well as its razor-sharp ridge near the summit. For people who have hiked Cloud's Rest, they are most impressed with the thrilling feeling they have while scrambling up the narrow ridge, with sheer drop-offs on both sides, to the summit. The fastest way to day hike Cloud's Rest starts from the Sunrise Lakes trailhead on Tioga Road near Tenaya Lake. This will be a HARD hike.

This is the 1st hike in the Yosemite series. The 2nd one is on Sunday:https://www.facebook.com/events/354615845132242/ Joining both is not required.

California Central Coast - Anniversary Hike to Two Trees

Hello ladies! Join us as we celebrate Girls Who Hike Central Coast chapter’s anniversary with a potluck hike to Two Trees and Barlow Canyon in Ventura. The hike will be co-hosted by GWHCC Ambassadors Susan Adamich and Caroline Paras and led by Rancho Ventura Conservation Trust administrators. In addition to the hike, chapter members are encouraged to bring a snack to share, and a towel or small pad for sitting on the ground.

Two Trees, one of the most iconic landmarks in Ventura, is on private agricultural land under the stewardship of Rancho Ventura Conservation Trust. Rancho Ventura is regularly open to the public for organized group hiking to Two Trees. GWHCC will be receiving an exclusive guided hike to Two Trees and then into the backcountry of Barlow Canyon by Mike Lydon, the Ranch Ventura Naturalist; Spencer Noren, the Rancho Ventura Community Outreach director, and Bonnie Atmore, the visionary and co-owner of the Rancho Ventura Conservation Trust property with her husband Richard Atmore.

During this ladies-only meetup, our chapter members will get to visit the permanently preserved land in the Ventura Hillsides, take in incredible views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands and the cities of Ventura and Oxnard, and the Los Padres National Forest and Topa Topa Mountains to the North and Santa Monica Mountains to the Southeast. There will be incredible photo opportunities due to the great visibility in the Fall and Winter months. Hike leaders will teach the story of the land, History of Two Trees, facts about wildlife and more during the hike.

This hike is open to all levels of hikers. The first trek of the hike will take us to Two Trees which is 2 miles round trip. If you decide to continue on, we will hike into Barlow Canyon, which will be 4.5 miles roundtrip.

California Central Coast - Cathedral Peak Trail

Hi ladies! I’m Jenny, and I’ll be leading this hike. This trail does include some class 2 climbing (scrambling).

It’s 4.5 miles round trip, it’s an out and back trail with 2,293 ft in elevation gain. Well established use trail climbs from Mission Creek to La Cumbre Peak via Cathedral Peak. The scramble up along the rocky ridge includes some class 2 rock climbing. The route from the Tunnel Trailhead to the top is 4 miles that are often quite steep. The hike usually begins at Tunnel Trailhead, then follows the road up for a mile. Turn onto Jesusita (toward Inspiration Point) for a short time to the bottom of Mission Creek. Here, find the trail traveling steeply up the west side of the canyon north of Jesusita. The Three Pools portion of the 7 Falls and 3 Pools trail will break off to the right soon in the climb. The people thin out substantially after 2.5 miles at Arlington Peak. This trail can become brutally hot, even in winter, and combined with the steep aspect, requires more water than similar miles on other trails. Search and Rescue is called here too often for the underprepared.

There is no water on the trail so make sure to bring at least 4L. We’ll be starting early, but it still can get hot because there is no shade, so make sure you come prepared with enough water. It’s marked as red because scrambling, the trail is not marked. I have a Garmin In-Reach I will have with me for the map.

Also bring snacks! If you feel low on energy, it'll be good to have some quick fuel snacks with you. We will stop for a break at the top before heading down. We can also stop along the way as needed.

If you are a registered member and have your punch card, don’t forget to bring it so I can initial it! If you’re not a registered member, you’re more than welcome to attend anyway! You can find out more about how to become one and get a punch card of your own here: https://girls-who-hike.myshopify.com/products/gwh-new-member-kit
I will not be handing out punch cards at this event. They’re available through purchase of a New Member Kit only.
