Trail maintenance consists of trimming branches and trees that obstruct the trail or the views from the trail. If we have 10+ people, we will also be able to build a new part of the trail!

Bring your regular hiking gear including lots of water and a lunch. If you have loppers or pruning shears, bring those as well.

South Carolina - Opossum Creek Falls

This event is hosted by Girls Who Hike Ambassadors Tara Moya-Mendez Becker and Kailani Ameele on 6/24/2018. The first 10 attendees will receive special Girls Who Hike giveaways before the hike starts.

Trail Name: Opossum Creek Falls Trail

Total Distance: 4 miles

Total Elevation Gain: 861ft

Trail info: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/south-carolina/opossum-creek-falls-trail--2
https://www.sctrails.net/trails/trail/opossum-creek-falls

Join GWHSC for a beautiful hike on the Opossum Creek Falls trail! This two-hour journey is quite an effort for the 50-foot Opossum Creek Falls, but depending on your spirit of adventure, reaching the falls could rank among your most rewarding waterfall excursions, or the most difficult. Most of the two-mile hike ambles along a pleasant, forest service trail shaded by an assortment of hardwoods and bordered at times by small partridgeberry wildflowers. When you reach the Chattooga River, turn left onto a heavily vegetated path and scramble around rocks and trees for a time-consuming half-mile hike to the base of the falls.

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous; GWH TRAIL RATING SYSTEM: YELLOW

***Let’s meet at the trailhead at 8:45am. Parking is LIMITED, so please carpool if possible! ***

ADDRESS: Stumphouse Tunnel Rd
Walhalla, SC 29691

TRAIL RATING: YELLOW: Moderate hike, well-signed, elevation gain of between 1,000-2,000ft., low altitude. Novice hikers welcome!

This month we are headed to Stumphouse Tunnel Park to explore 3 unfinished railroad tunnels and the amazing Issaqueena Falls waterfall! We will meet at the upper parking lot next to the entrance to Stumphouse Tunnel. We will explore that tunnel, then proceed to the waterfall. From there, we will hike the Blue Ridge Railroad Historic Trail to view the second and third tunnel.
There is tons of history at this place! The railroad and tunnels were planned in 1852 to connect Cincinnati, OH to Charleston, SC. Lack of funds and the start of the Civil War stopped the construction, and today the tunnels are viewed as pre-Civil War engineering monuments. The waterfall also has some Native American history (I provided some links above if you’re interested in the story). FUN FACT: the trail we’ll hike will also become part of the Palmetto Trail in the near future!
Women-only event please! Pups are okay as long as they are well-behaved and well-prepared! ***Please bring $2 per vehicle to pay your entrance into the park. We should be on the trail for approximately 3 hours, so please plan accordingly. Bring water, snacks, and a flashlight/headlamp for inside the tunnel. More information and details to come as the event gets closer. In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions and I’ll see you soon!

GWH Southeast Region Meetup - Providence Canyon

Looking for another adventure to add to your camping and hiking bucket list? Well, I have the perfect hike for you and this is what I consider to be Georgia’s most unique state park, Providence Canyon.

Providence Canyon is considered Georgia’s “little Grand Canyon.” It’s only been around since the 1800s and was originally created because of poor farming practices when farmers were not taking the proper steps to avoid soil erosion. Over the year’s constant moving water within the sandstone have naturally carved out these awe-inspiring sandstone canyons.

GWH would like to invite you to join us on an exclusive collaborative camping and hiking event between the Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina chapter groups. We will be reserving several back country campsites for our groups where we are planning an overnight trip for Saturday, March 10th. We will meet up Saturday morning to do some hiking on the and exploring along the White Trail. Then, grab our belongings and backpack 3-4 miles to our campsites along the back country trail.

If camping and backpacking is not your jam, but you’re still interested in day hiking Providence Canyon you are still more than welcome to join in our day hike. In regards to pacing GWHGA stays together as a group to encourage one another. We are here to spread motivation, positive vibes, and support to our members along the trails. Please mention below in comments that you will be doing this, so then we can plan accordingly for how many to expect for camping purposes.

The trail we plan to explore Saturday is the White Blaze Canyon Loop trail, which is around 5 miles and considered a moderate hiking trail. The Canyon Loop trail wanders through 9 of the extraordinary canyons, a sandy riverbed of constant moving water along portions of the canyon floors, through a shady forest, and back up to the top where you can peer into the canyon at various overlooks along the edge of the canyon. As you hike into the canyons you will notice how each are dramatically shaped and one of a kind due to the carvings of the constant moving water. These canyons are different from the Grand Canyon though, because Providence Canyon’s walls are made of fragile crumbling sandstone.

All Attendees for day hiking or camping are required to RSVP on the eventbrite as well (link below)
