Los Angeles - Tails & Trails Dog Friendly Hike

This dog friendly series is led by LA Ambassador Mia Svenson!

If you are a registered member and have your punch card, don’t forget to bring it so I can initial it! If you’re not a registered member, you can find out more about how to become one and get a punch card of your own here:https://girls-who-hike.myshopify.com/products/gwh-new-member-kit

*Please note that while this series is geared towards dogs and their people, dogless people are more than welcome to attend as well!*

ADULT DOGS ONLY: Puppies who have not reached full physical maturity and are under the age of 1 year old are NOT allowed. This is a safety and health concern for your puppy. Repeated physical strain before a puppy's bones have fully ossified can lead to bone malformation and is a leading cause of osteoporosis, hip dysplasia and arthritis in adult dogs.

DECEMBER HIKE:
Sostomo & Deer Valley Loop Trail

NOTES:
We will be following the LNT principles for hikes on this series. You are REQUIRED to pack your dogs poop out regardless of whether or not the poop bags are biodegradable. Attendance will be capped at 20 people (including myself) for all hikes.

Friendly adventure pups only please! Some arguments between our pooches may happen, but if your dog has a history of being unfriendly or attacking other dogs, please either leave him or her at home, or let me know ahead of time.

If your dog is nervous around other dogs and you're trying to socialize him or her, you're welcome to bring him along, but he or she will be required to wear a yellow bandana. This is part of the yellow ribbon project, and let's other owners know that your dog may need a little bit of extra care when being approached.

WATER:
Your dog needs 1.5 -1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight over the course of a 12-hour day.
Math is hard and I hate it, but in this case, it’s absolutely worth it. I use 1.5 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is under 70 degrees, and 1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is over 70 degrees.

The formula to use here is: [(weight of dog x 1.5 oz.) / 12 hours] x the hours you will be hiking.

Here it is step by step with my dog’s stats:

50 lbs. x 1.5 oz. = 75 oz.
75 oz. / 12 = 6.25 oz. per hour
So, if I’m hiking for 7 hours in cooler weather, my dog will need 43.75 oz. of water.

Any updates and information about future hikes will be posted on the event thread via the pinned post, and I’ll update the event description if anything big changes!

California Los Angeles - Mentryville Pico Canyon Trail

Hello, this is a GWHLA - SCV official hike, led by Ambassador Kristina
MENTRYVILLE - PICO CANYON TRAIL
Trail Rating: moderate (yellow)
Date: September 9, Sunday
Time: 7:15am
Distance: 6.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 1300'
Water Required: yes - bring at least 1.5L
Dogs: yes
Kids: 12+ yrs
Men: No
Permits/Parking: none required
AllTrail tracks: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mentryville-pico-canyon-trail

This is fun hike that takes you through Mentryville "ghost town" where you can explore some old historic buildings and keep on a paved road for the first mile or so (very easy for novice hikers as well) before starting the trail up and gradually gaining about 1200' elevation over 2.5 miles (moderate). Beautiful views of Santa Clarita at the top.
Parking is free at the gate (when arriving off of Pico Canyon) and is along the road - no permit required. This is where we are meeting! (There is about 0.3 mile walking off this gate to the trail head on a paved road - there is parking there as well but have to pay $5 for it, and this is NOT where we will meet originally. However, if you choose to pay the $5 and wait for us at the trail head - that is up to you ).

ADULT DOGS ONLY: Puppies who have not reached full physical maturity and are under the age of 1 year old are NOT allowed. This is a safety and health concern for your puppy. NOTES:
We will be following the LNT principles for hikes on this series. You are REQUIRED to pack your dogs poop out regardless of whether or not the poop bags are biodegradable.

Friendly adventure pups only please! Some arguments between our pooches may happen, but if your dog has a history of being unfriendly or attacking other dogs, please leave him or her at home.

50 lbs. x 1.5 oz. = 75 oz.
75 oz. / 12 = 6.25 oz. per hour
So, if I’m hiking for 7 hours in cooler weather, my dog will need 43.75 oz. of water.

Come tackle one of the six pack up peaks (or eight if you’re fancy) with us via the strenuous, but less traveled route. It starts at Manker Flats, but traverses straight up to Mt Harwood gaining about 4100ft in 3.3 miles. I have yet to try this route, but am looking to venture out to it with some ladies looking to change things up ;).

***This hike is appropriate if you are ok with steep paths, have done one of the six pack of peaks in the last two months, and can carry 6L of water. We will try to keep a pace of 1.5 miles per hour so please know your limits. With that being said, no one will get left behind and I will turn back with anyone if necessary. You also have a month to prepare for this hike so don’t be discouraged if you haven’t completed a high elevation hike this year. Reach out to the group and there are plenty of girls always willing to train/hike! :)

Distance: 8 miles out and back

Peak elevation: 10,064ft

Elevation change: 4100ft

Hiking time: 8-10 hours, but be prepared for a long day in case we need more breaks than anticipated.

Meeting time: 4:30am at the trailhead. This will allow time to stretch/use the bathroom/get situated. We will be leaving at 5:00am SHARP. Please don't be late as courtesy for the ladies that are coming from further away.

Parking: ADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED. Park at Manker Flats (this is PAST the Manker Flats campground). You will see rows of cars parked when you make the left turn. Trailhead coordinates are (34.2662545,-117.6269269).

Directions: From the 210 freeway, exit Baseline (eastbound) or Mountain (westbound) and head north towards Mt. Baldy Road and Mt. Baldy Village. Continue past Mt. Baldy Village and take a left towards the Mt. Baldy Ski Resort when you see the parking lot for Icehouse Canyon. The trailhead is just after the Manker Flat camping area and just before the ski lift parking lot. **there is no service at the trailhead.**

What you need:

1. copy of the trail map (paper or downloaded to phone)
2. At least 6 L of water. It will be hot and we will not be going through water sources to refill.
3. Trekking poles. This hike is steep so save your knees :)
4. Always have your 10 hiking essentials (https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html).

I highly encourage drivers to have a co-pilot in their car who can take over when the driver gets tired, this is 10 hours of driving in one day, plus hiking, driving will be draining.

With all that said, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A DRIVER PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING: Post a comment below with

Hello Ladies! My name is Julie Anne and I am an ambassador for LA - San Fernando Valley! I would like to invite you to a Sunday morning hike to Mill Creek Falls near the Big Tujunga Narrows Bridge off of Angeles Forest Freeway. This will be a co-ed Hike so feel free to bring your significant other or friend(s). Please make sure they sign our liability waiver. I will also have waiver forms ready at our meetup time prior to the start time.

The first 10 members who arrive will receive a special Girl Who Hike giveaway!

This hike may seem short, but does require some bouldering throughout the hike. We will also be walking through the creek at times. So I suggest bringing an extra pair of shoes. Also depending on the size of the group this trail also connects to Monkey Canyon (1.1 mile and more strenuous) if you ladies are up for a longer adventure! It is a fun hike so hope to see you all there!

California San Gabriel Valley - Mt. Williamson & Pallett Mountain

This Hike is led by GWHLA-SGV Ambassador Graciela!

Continuing with the 100 Peaks Section list, this hike will help us bag 2 peaks in the Angeles National Forest. We will start at Islip Saddle and take the PCT up to Mt. Williamson for our first peak. From there we'll continue on the Pleasant View Ridge up to Pallett Mountain. We will return the way we came back to the Islip Saddle parking lot.

Let's try to carpool the best we can since parking can be limited at the trailhead and as we know, weekend hikes can be busy. Bring your Adventure Pass to park! And be on time. We will leave promptly at 0710.

Trail Rating: This is a red hike on the GWH scale – It is over 7 miles, and has unmarked trails, may not have signage and has elevation gain of over 2,000 feet

California Los Angeles - Knee Care Clinic

Hello! My name is Mia Svenson! I'm a Los Angeles Ambassador for Girls Who Hike, and I'll be leading this event.

The first ten members to arrive will receive special giveaways at this event!

This special event will directly address common issues surrounding knee pain caused by hiking. Christine Vaughn Bauman of Perfectly Balanced Body is a personal trainer who specializes in corrective exercise with a background in clinical massage therapy. In addition to her impressive resume, Christine is a hiker herself and has summited Mt. Whitney!

Christine will be taking us through a series of exercises that will help us rebalance how we hike, reactivate muscles and relieve and prevent knee pain.

LOCATION:
This event will take place at one of the following locations (pending permits and weather)
Cloverfield Park: 2600 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405
OR
Porto Marina Beach: Porto Marina Way x PCH, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

TIME:
There are two time slots available, both are one hour long and have a maximum class size of 20 people. There will be one hour between each time slot, so you'll have time to ask Christine questions! Please keep your questions related directly to knee pain. (If we're lucky Christine will work with us for future events related to hip, back, and ankle pain).

SLOT 1: 1:00-2:00 PM
SLOT 2: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM

In order to secure your ticket, please send Venmo payment of $15 to @Mia-Svenson. Please include your first and last name and the time slot you are registering for in the note of your payment. Registration is transferable, but not refundable. If you need to transfer your registration, please independently find someone else to buy your registration slot.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
- Permits / Passes: Payment by Venmo required
- This is a members only event - men and children are not allowed.
- Dogs are not allowed.
- Please bring a foam roller or nalgene bottle, a yoga mat or towel, sunscreen, and at least one liter of water
- No need to wear hiking gear, but wear clothing you're comfortable moving and sweating in

***If you'd like to learn more about Christine, you can check out her website here: www.perfectlybalancedbody.com***
Christine charges $275 per hour for one on one rebalancing, and $400+ per hour for group rebalancing, so she is doing us an amazing favor and giving us a huge discount!
