ADULT DOGS ONLY: Puppies who have not reached full physical maturity and are under the age of 1 year old are NOT allowed. This is a safety and health concern for your puppy. NOTES:
We will be following the LNT principles for hikes on this series. You are REQUIRED to pack your dogs poop out regardless of whether or not the poop bags are biodegradable.

Friendly adventure pups only please! Some arguments between our pooches may happen, but if your dog has a history of being unfriendly or attacking other dogs, please either leave him or her at home, or let me know ahead of time.

If your dog is nervous around other dogs and you're trying to socialize him or her, you're welcome to bring him along, but he or she will be required to wear a yellow bandana. This is part of the yellow ribbon project, and let's other owners know that your dog may need a little bit of extra care when being approached.

WATER:
Your dog needs 1.5 -1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight over the course of a 12-hour day.
Math is hard and I hate it, but in this case, it’s absolutely worth it. I use 1.5 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is under 70 degrees, and 1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is over 70 degrees.

The formula to use here is: [(weight of dog x 1.5 oz.) / 12 hours] x the hours you will be hiking.

Here it is step by step with my dog’s stats:

50 lbs. x 1.5 oz. = 75 oz.
75 oz. / 12 = 6.25 oz. per hour
So, if I’m hiking for 7 hours in cooler weather, my dog will need 43.75 oz. of water.

Trail description:
The best place to learn and study about Michigan's amazing sand dunes is at P. J. Hoffmaster State Park, where you can combine a visit to the Gillette Visitor Center, Michigan’s Sand Dune Interpretive Center, with a hike through the various life zones of a dune along the Homestead Trail.

The Gillette Visitor Center was built in 1976 as a bicentennial project to serve as an interpretive center to the state’s most noted natural treasure. The two-story center is literally overshadowed by a huge, windblown dune that can be viewed from a glass wall on the west side of the lobby.

Beginning from the visitor center parking lot is this 2.7-mile loop known as the Homestead Trail.

The Homestead Trail circuit may look rugged, but the climbs are moderate.

Most of the trail passes through a designated Natural Area and includes possible side trips to a Quiet Area, the park’s most remote corner. You also climb up a long stairway to magnificent views from the Dune Overlook Platform.

Summer is an ideal time for this hike, when you can stop for a swim in the Great Lake, but it’s also the park’s busiest season. Many like to come here in spring or fall when the crowds are gone and there’s nothing on the beaches but sand, driftwood, and a bootprint or two.

"Q. What is the easiest trail?
A. Contrary to printed information, the Boulevard Trail is not the easiest trail to the lodge. It is the longest trail and it is continuously descending and climbing with the last 1 1/2 mile of 800 ft. elevation gain. Some people feel that the Trillium Gap trail (6.7 miles) is the easiest trail to the lodge as this is the trail the llamas use to bring supplies three times a week and it is not as steep as the other trails. Short 3-4 mile downhill hike above and along San Mateo Creek brings you to Fisherman's Camp (San Mateo Canyon Trail, Tenaja Trail, and Tenaja Falls Trail). San Mateo Canyon continues another 9.3 miles beyond the junction and you will find grassy stretches, cool Creekside oak and sycamore woodlands, and broad open areas. This trail provides some of the finest day and overnight hiking trips in the wilderness...best times of the year are fall, winter and spring. This trail is good for all skill levels and we will go at moderately leisurely pace! This trail is long but we will only be going down to Fisherman’s Camp and then turning around and heading back up. The trail should have a good amount of shade for a good portion of the way. There are exposed areas also so remember SPF and a hat.
There is a possibility that there will be bugs! Be prepared with bug spray 

California Orange County - Kayak / SUP Newport Bay

This event is led by GWHOC Ambassador Brandi "B" Rubin

Hi girls~ Brandi here, fellow GWH member and one of your awesome OC Chapter Ambassadors. Thought we might switch things up a bit in Sept.
Lets kayak and paddle around balboa island and Newport Beach Back Bay. Its so hard to predict the weather from now until then so I'll just say dress as if you were going to the beach, bring a top layer. If you have a waterproof/dry bag, definitely bring that for your essentials you don't want to leave behind at the kayak center.

If you are a registered member and have your punch card, don’t forget to bring it so I can initial it! If you’re not a registered member, you can find out more about how to become one and get a punch card of your own here: https://girls-who-hike.myshopify.com/products/gwh-new-member-kit

NO ADVANCE reservations are accepted. We pay upon arrival, it is first come first serve. On their website, the pictures show they have many many kayaks and stand-up paddle boards and since we are arriving as soon as they open I'm sure we can be accommodated.

We can decide as a group how long we want to stay out upon arrival. And we can decide together where we'd like to grab lunch afterwards. This is just an option and not a mandatory lunch :)

I will have new chapstick giveaways for EVERY member who attends. We can never have enough of that.

The fees for kayak and sup rentals are as follows:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1MdqJfHS97GYIJsO4NQ5WryuZMv7EbMb5

single kayak = $14/hr or $50/day
double kayak= $20/hr or $65/day
Paddle board= $20/hr or $65/day

I plan on getting a single kayak for myself but if you'd like to share a kayak with someone please do.

As I mentioned above, please bring the essentials you would bring to a day at the beach; sunscreen, hat, bathing suit, comfortable shoes you dont' mind getting wet, base layers of clothing and a top waterproof layer in case the weather changes temporarily while we are out. Please bring at least 2L of water, if you'd like to bring snacks, please do. I anticipate an hour or two float/paddle session and if you think you may need/want snacks...definitely bring them. Please bring an ID in case they need it for the kayak/sup rental. Bring a waterproof/dry bag if you have one to keep your personal effects in while we are on the water. There is a spot to keep your personal items in the rental center, I choose to keep my gear with me. I will have my first aid kit, if you feel comfortable or want to bring yours as well, please do. Please bring anything with you, that will make you feel comfortable and safe.

THIS EVENT IS FOR EVERYONE ~ EVERY & ANY SKILL LEVEL AND INEXPERIENCED ARE WELCOME ALSO. This is an event with minimal physical exertion and ever level of physicality is invited and encouraged to attend. This is a great opportunity if you have been wanting to try either kayaking or sup'ing...the waters will be calm and the day will be beautiful.
I am optimistic the weather will be fabulous :)

This is fun hike that takes you through Mentryville "ghost town" where you can explore some old historic buildings and keep on a paved road for the first mile or so (very easy for novice hikers as well) before starting the trail up and gradually gaining about 1200' elevation over 2.5 miles (moderate). Beautiful views of Santa Clarita at the top.
Parking is free at the gate (when arriving off of Pico Canyon) and is along the road - no permit required. This is where we are meeting! (There is about 0.3 mile walking off this gate to the trail head on a paved road - there is parking there as well but have to pay $5 for it, and this is NOT where we will meet originally. However, if you choose to pay the $5 and wait for us at the trail head - that is up to you ).
