Maryland - Lostland Run Trail

This event is hosted by Girls Who Hike Ambassador Maryland Charissa Hipp and takes us to the western corner of our state. It includes a hike through a gorgeous hemlock-laurel canyon, stream crossings (most on footbridges, but not all) and a waterfall. Does it get any better than that?! Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for this hike! Hiking poles aren't a bad idea, if you have them, and will help with the stream crossings that don't have footbridges. Long pants are recommended because there are a few sections of the trail that have narrow passages with stinging nettles on both sides.

California Central Coast - Walk Like MADD

Walk Like MADD - a fundraising 5K walk for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador Susan Adamich!

2019 Ventura County Walk Like MADD 5K

This event is dedicated to Chris Prewitt, my friend and classmate whose life was tragically cut short.

Why We Walk: CHRIS PREWITT
Home City: Ventura, California
Crash Anniversary: April 06, 2014
On the early morning of April 6th, 2014, Chris Prewitt was jogging, training for a marathon, along the side of Victoria Avenue between the cities of Ventura and Oxnard. His goal was to run 16 miles that morning, come home to his wife and daughter, and spend the day with them. Tragically, he never came home. Chris was struck and killed by a driver who was operating her vehicle under the influence of xanex and marijuana. A choice was made, and that choice took another person’s life.
Chris Prewitt was a figure-head in the community of Ventura-- a coach, a teacher, a vice principal, but most importantly, he was a husband and father. He was known for his kind heart, his tenacity to work with students and athletes to ensure their success, and he was a dear friend to many. Not only was Chris heavily involved with his community, and beloved by those who worked with him, but Chris was also a loving husband and incredible father. Erin and Izzy were the two people that this tragedy struck the hardest. The loss of a husband and father is one that no family should have to shoulder, and the senseless loss of his life is one that they have to wake to, every day, for the rest of their days. We share Chris’s story in hopes that it serves as a cautionary tale to those that hear it. That we can help end the vicious cycle of senseless decisions involving drugs, drinking and driving, which leads to the loss of innocent life. That one decision can result in another’s loss, taking away something irreplaceable.

Trail Rating: It’s a run/walk on city sidewalks, but if it was a hike it would be rated GREEN: Mellow hike, easy to follow, elevation gain of 1,000ft. and under, low altitude. Novice hikers welcome! 2L of water required.

Date: Saturday, August 10, 2019
Time: Check in: 7:00 am-8:30 am. Race 9:00 am-11:00 am - Afterwards, everyone is invited to gather for lunch at the Collection - there are many good choices of eating places.
Optional dress is 80’s theme for the walk.

Georgia - Sawnee Mountain Sunrise

This event is led by Girls Who Hike GA Ambassador Cara Hurlburt-Ebeling. Please read the entire event description to catch all important details. Rise and Shine GHWGA! Get your weekend started right with a sunrise hike at Sawnee Mountain Preserve. We will meet at 6 am and start hiking promptly by 6:10 am, with sunrise slated for 6:56 am. We'll hike the “short trail” (approximately .75 miles) up from the Bettis Tribble Gap parking lot and catch sunrise on the namesake “Indian Seat” rock formations. After taking in sunrise and the beautiful morning golden hour, we'll take a longer route back down to the parking lot to get a little extra exercise. Total hike mileage will be around 3.45 miles, with the majority being descent. Please bring a headlamp for the hike up. Trekking poles may also be beneficial for hiking in the dark. While the Indian Seats does not have direct Eastern exposure, sunrise here is very beautiful, with mist in the valley below and golden rays highlighting the trees and rocks.
