RED HIKE NOTES: Personal trail map REQUIRED, trail map & water check at trailhead before we begin, we may split up based on pace and you must be comfortable navigating solo
A NOTE ABOUT PACE: Every girl must feel comfortable with a little space between us depending on pace. Normally the group will split into two groups depending on size- one slightly faster and one slightly slower. I WILL ALWAYS SWEEP AND WILL NEVER LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND. My rule is the faster paced group may go ahead- but you MUST be willing to be patient, supportive, and considerate of slower hikers. This means coming prepared, being willing to take breaks and wait at trail junctions/water crossings/etc. This also means every single girl attending must be prepared with proper gear and must read up on the event so you feel comfortable and importantly MUST CARRY 3 L WATER AND A TRAIL MAP.

California Los Angeles - Iron Mountain via Heaton Flat Trail

This Hike is led by GWHLA Ambassador Hollie O'Brien! All attendees will receive special Girls Who Hike giveaways before the hike starts.

This is the first of my "insane series" I plan on hosting as a GWHLA ambassador. For hike 1, I chose Iron Mountain #1.

Iron Mountain #1, also known as “Big Iron”, is often considered one of the most remote and strenuous day hikes in the San Gabriels. This exposed and relentless, extremely rough use-trail climbs over 6,000 feet to reach the summit. Once at the top, you will feel you are at the center of the San Gabriels with breathtaking views in all directions.

RED: Strenuous hike, possible unmarked trail, elevation gain of 2,500+, altitude up to 9,500ft. Experienced hikers welcome, semi-experienced welcome if they plan on training beforehand! We’ll be hiking as a group, and nobody will be left behind or forgotten.

Iron Mountain via Heaton Flat Trail
Date: May 26th
Time: 4:30 AM
Distance: 12.6 Miles
EG: 6,338 feet
Location: Iron Mountain Trailhead (same parking lot as Bridge to Nowhere): 34.2367022,-117.7653409
Dogs: No
Permits / Passes: Eventbrite required, Adventure Pass required
AllTrails Track: (It's an out and back) https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/heaton-flat-trail-to-iron-mountain
Kids: No (Except for older teens who have the ability/strength/stamina and a parent accompanying them)
Men: No

***As with all GWH events, you must sign the GWH waiver before attending – it takes less than a minute to sign, and once you’ve signed it once you’re good to go for all future meetups***
LINK TO WAIVER: http://bit.ly/GWHLiabilityWaiver

Meeting time: 4:15 am and we will start hiking promptly at 4:30 am (I know this is early but that gives us an hour to hike to the first saddle to catch the sunrise. I have the philosophy to start early and be heading down before the heat of the day.)

WHAT TO BRING:
Bring your 10 essentials: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html
5L of water minimum is REQUIRED (I am bringing at least 7L)
A trail map is REQUIRED (either paper or downloaded from AllTrails)
Bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
Trekking Poles
Nutrient dense snacks
Electrolyte chews or tablets
Mosquito net (if desired, not required)

Hey ladies! Iron Mountain has been on my list since I passed the trailhead when I was hiking to Bridge to Nowhere. Now's the time to bag that peak! This peak is a serious beast but such a rewarding challenge, and I can't wait to tackle it with you all. Although fur babies are allowed on this trail, I ask that you leave them at home for this hike due to the difficulty level and likelihood of sharp plants. Men must stay at home for this hike. An EVENTBRITE ticket is required and will be released on May 1st, so keep an eye out! I will post on here when they are released as well. As always, password is GWHLA.

Since we’ll be at a high altitude, please make sure you bring aspirin or another headache soother, electrolytes, extra water, and I recommend bringing something to help you with nausea – you never know!

To complete this difficult hike, we highly recommend bringing electrolytes, lots of snacks, at least 3 L of water, and all of your 10 essentials. In addition, we recommend water shoes for the stream crossings. We will have to wade (up to knee deep) through a few. You may also want to bring a portable phone charger, especially if you plan to snap a lot of photos.

Rim the Gap Loop consists of sections of Frank Coggins Loop, Coldspring Branch Trail, and the Jones Gap Trail. It also includes Rim the Gap Trail and Coldspring Connector. Halfway through the hike we will stop at the Jones Gap State Park Learning Center for a rest break (food and indoor restrooms).

Several stream crossings
A rope bridge
Rock Scrambling
Crawling through narrow spaces
Steep drop-offs
Lots of breathtaking views
An amazing sense of accomplishment

We’ll be hiking as a group, and nobody will be left behind or forgotten. On this hike, it will be particularly important that everyone hikes together, at the pace of the slowest hiker. We will take a lot of breaks in order to maintain our stamina throughout the hike. This hike is not for anyone unable to sustain strenuous activity for long periods or who has mobility limitations.

Due to the difficulty of this trail, this hike is limited to 10 participants. You MUST register on the Eventbrite link to confirm your spot. You will also be asked to provide an emergency contact (just in case).

Georgia - Dawson Forest Waterfall

Hey y'all! I'm Lauren and one of the GWH GA ambassadors. I'll be leading this hike through Dawson Forest, one of my favorite, majestic, hidden forests.

Ticket Required: Eventbrite (1 ticket per hiker)
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gwhga-dawson-forest-waterfall-official-event-tickets-44737124945
Password: GWHGAdawsonwaterfall

The first 10 members to arrive will receive special Girls Who Hike giveaways!

We will be departing from the Wildcat Creek Campground of Dawson Forest at 10am! Please arrive before 10am as this is a longer hike of 8 miles out and back and I want to be sure everyone has an opportunity to explore this place to the fullest. I recommend using Google Maps and typing "Wildcat Creek Campground, Dawsonville, Georgia" in your phone. Please note there are other Wildcat Creeks in Georgia, so make sure you are going to Dawsonville. Carpooling is encouraged because parking can be limited. Also, this along a forest service road that has potholes so please be aware and drive slow. SUV's encouraged as well.

We will follow along the green-blazed WildCat Creek Tract following Amicalola Creek and WildCat Creek for 3 miles before arriving at our first destination, Fourth Falls on Fall Creek. Before Fourth Falls, there is a deeper creek crossing that will require you to get wet! There are ropes attached where you can scramble on rocks and hold on and get minimally wet, otherwise you can ford the creek in about knee deep water. Also, about calf-deep water to ford the creek heading into Fourth Falls for a good view of the falls and sandbar. From there, we will return to the main trail and take Tobacco Pouch Trail from Wildcat Trek trek another mile where we will get forest views up above Third Falls on Fall Creek and head towards what is known as Second Falls on Fall Creek, the biggest gem. Again, you will have to get wet in calf-deep water to get the rewarding views of the falls. From this falls we will head back the 4 mile trail back to the parking lot.

Overall, I would like to keep pacing around 2 miles per hour so everyone can enjoy both waterfalls and the scenery. The total elevation gain was around 761 feet according to my Gaia GPS app when I tracked the route.

Bring plenty of water and some snacks, as this hike will take about 5 hours to complete if 2 mph pace is maintained. Also, I have had no problem with my hiking shoes causing blisters when wet, but I would recommend bringing 1 pair of dry, heavy socks as well as sandals to slip into for water crossings if you are worried about blistering.

I am capping this event at only 15 people, so the first 17 people to sign up on EventBrite when I am able to get it made will be able to go. Please, if you sign up and can not make the event, contact me prior to the hike so another woman wanting to go may take your spot. The trail is not widely used by the public, so if we have the luck I have always had, we will have the area mostly to ourselves.

This is a dog-friendly trail, but be mindful that as the months are getting warmer, more snakes are out and about. No children or men please, this will be a women-only hiking event.

A NOTE REGARDING PACING: This is a more moderate hike, in order to finish at an appropriate time, I ask that you please only attend if you can comfortably maintain a 2mph pace and are ok with getting wet.

***In order to attend an official meetup, ALL ATTENDEES MUST have a signed Liability Waiver on file. Please see the Group Rules for details/link to sign. It takes 60 seconds to complete and one waiver clears you for all meetups!***

North Carolina - Rattlesnake Lodge

Rattlesnake Lodge was the former summer home of Asheville physician and outdoor activist Dr. Chase P. Ambler. The Amblers built their summer retreat in 1903 and occupied it until 1920. The Lodge is long gone, victim of a fire in the late 1920s.

The retaining walls and foundations for its tennis courts, swimming pool, and caretaker's cabins will give you a good feel for the lifestyle of the rich and famous—famous in Asheville at least. Ambler's wife and children went up to the Lodge as soon as school let out and came back to Asheville in the fall. Dr. Ambler visited on weekends.

NOTE- IF YOU HAVE ANY ALLERGIES/FOOD SENSITIVITIES, PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN ITEMS. I wish I could accommodate everyone’s diets, but with the number of people involved it’s simply easier if you each take care of yourselves in that matter. Plus, no chance of accidental contact!

Hiking: Mohican has many wonderful trails to explore! We’ll have hiking adventures both days! Feel free to do some gear-loading with your packs, as a practice for your own future trips!

I ask that this event be adults only. I fully support and applaud those of you who have trail-savvy kids, but we have limited space, and I want those spots to be available for other members!

Northern California - Backpacking Big Sur

Hello ladies! First backpacking trip hosted by ambassador, Tiffany. I am excited because I want to test my light backpacking gear and I know some of you ladies showed interest in backpacking. This is not for people afraid of heights or not active. You must own or purchase backpacking gear! Packing light with light, warm gear is necessary. 2 days, 1 night of challenge and excitement.

This hike is steep and strenuous, but I will be hiking at a moderate pace. We start by CA highway 1 and park by Kirk Creek campground, then hike 5 miles up to Vicente Flat campground. We set up camp, and start hiking up 2.5 miles one way to Cone Peak for sunset. WE WILL BE HIKING BACK DOWN TO THE CAMPGROUND IN DUSK/DARK CONDITIONS SO YOU NEED A HEAD LAMP. At night, we enjoy a campfire and relax before sleep. The next morning, we hike back down 5 miles to the cars.

Total round trip to/from Vicente Flat campsite from car: 10.9 miles, 2585 elevation gain.

Total round trip to/from Cone Peak to campsite: 5 miles, roughly 1800 elevation gain

More details to come and gear list. I will start a group chat to coordinate once we get a little closer.

California Los Angeles - Hike to the Top of the Notch

Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie Cho and I’m a new Ambassador for GWHLA - SGV. I’ll be leading a hike up to the Top of the Notch with a quick detour to San Antonio Falls on the way back - if you are unfamiliar with the Mt. Baldy area, this is the hike for you! (Detailed hike description below.)

Note: We will NOT be summiting Mt. San Antonio (aka Mt. Baldy) during this hike. If you’re looking to conquer a peak near this area (for 6POP or otherwise), I’ll be hosting a hike to one of the peaks (Baldy, Cucamonga, Ontario, etc.) later this year. My fellow GWHLA ambassadors will be hosting hikes to peaks all over LA County & beyond before then, so please feel free to join them on those hikes!

*The first 10 members to arrive will receive special Girls Who Hike giveaways!*

Detailed Hike Description:
Manker Flats to Top of the Notch to San Antonio Falls via Falls Rd. & Mt. Baldy Rd.
Date: Saturday, May 19, 2018
Location: 901 Falls Rd, Mt Baldy, CA 91759 (34.266452, -117.626808)
Time: Meet @ 7:45am; Hike Starts @ 8am (IMPORTANT: Please be on time! There is NO service at Manker Flats. I will be at the start of Falls Rd.)
Total Distance: 7.2 miles (3.6 miles to the Top of the Notch from Manker Flats)
Total Elevation Gain: 1,642ft.
Adventure Pass Needed?: YES
Dogs: Yes
Kids: Yes (Although this is a kid-friendly hike, please be sure that your kid can handle a 7.2 mile hike. I’ve seen kids on this trail before so it’s definitely doable for kids! I’m trusting your mom instincts on this one! :))
Men: No
GWH Trail Difficulty Rating: YELLOW - oderate ike, ell-signed, levation ain f etween ,000-2,000ft., max. altitude under 8,000. ovice ikers elcome!

This hike is open to hikers of all skill levels. We’ll be hiking as a group, and nobody will be left behind or forgotten. I estimate that this hike will take between 4-5 hours, depending on how much time is spent at the Top of the Notch and at San Antonio Falls.

This trail features views of the San Gabriel Valley, many peaks (including Mt. Baldy), the Mt. Baldy chair lifts, and a waterfall (in which you’ll get to dunk your feet in if you choose).

Top of the Notch (elevation: 7, 802 ft.) is the restaurant that will signal the halfway point of our hike - we’ll be heading back down once we get to the Top of the Notch, but not after enjoying some time for photos & some food! The restaurant will be open and serving breakfast by the time we get up there, so if you want to try their food, be sure to bring some cash or your credit card. Don’t feel pushed to purchase food at the restaurant - you are more than welcome to bring your own food! There are several tables outside we can sit at an enjoy the views & food. (I myself will not be purchasing any food because I’ll have my pups with me and cannot go inside!)

There are restroom facilities at the Top of the Notch so if you or your kiddos need to use the restroom, you can do so here!

California San Gabriel Valley - Mt. Islip and Hawkins Family

This Hike is led by GWH-SGV Ambassador Graciela!

I'm so excited to be a new ambassador for the San Gabriel Valley chapter! This is the first hike I am leading as part of my "100 Peak Section" series. We will not be able to get through all of the peaks on the Sierra Club's 100 peak list but the goal is to conquer as many as we can within each hike.

Please read complete posting since this is a challenging hike

We will meet in the parking lot behind the Crystal Lake Campgrounds and leave no later than 7:05am so please be on time. We will start with the Windy Gap Trail, then take the South Hawkins Trail to bag our first peak, South Hawkins. From here, we'll head up the Hawkins Ridge Trail to conquer the next peak, Middle Hawkins. At the PCT junction we will head right to reach our third peak, Mount Hawkins. We'll backtrack on the PCT towards the Mt. Islip Trail to bag our last peak, Mt. Islip. We'll then backtrack to the Windy Gap trail and make our way down to the parking lot. We will bag 4 peaks in this hike: South Hawkins, Middle Hawkins, Mount Hawkins, and Mt. Islip. While it's not on the Sierra Club list, we will also reach Sadie Hawkins to complete the Hawkins family.

Trail Rating: This is a red hike on the GWH scale – It is over 7 miles, and has unmarked trails, may not have signage and has elevation gain of over 2,000 feet. Experienced, moderate to fast pace hikers are best for group safety and to cover all the miles within allotted time.

Date: May 16th, Wednesday
Time: 7:00 AM
Distance: Approximately 14 Miles
EG: Approximately 3,500 feet
Location: Crystal Lake CG Parking: 34.326854, -117.832215
Dogs: No
Adventure Pass required to park at Crystal Lake
No Eventbrite ticket needed for this one since it's midweek
AllTrails Track: There is no existing All Trails map for this exact hike but this one is close. It just doesn't contain the section to Mt. Islip.

This hike is best for moderate to fast paced experienced hikers. Nobody will be left behind or forgotten.
