To complete this hike, I highly recommend bringing snacks, 2 L of water, and your 10 essentials.

This hike is open to hikers of all skill levels. We’ll be hiking as a group, and nobody will be left behind or forgotten.

Any updates will be posted on the event thread via the pinned post, and I’ll update the event description if anything changes!

This trail can be a bit slippery due to snow, ice, and wet conditions. This makes for slow and careful hiking on the way down from the overlook. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for us, but be prepared for muddy conditions if it has rained a few days prior.

I did not have cell phone reception or Wi-Fi service in the park until I reached the overlook.

There was no official address for the winter parking lot but the address given should be very close to the lot. I believe the lot should be easy to find. Please note the main entrance is closed during the winter and you will not be able to get into the park through that entrance. Please ask any additional questions if you have them and I hope to see you there!

CANCELLED - Washington - Lime Kiln Trail

Unfortunately this hike has been cancelled. We hope to see you on the trails soon!

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador Chelsea Elwell!

Plan on hiking at a slow-medium pace, with plenty of breaks for pictures! This is an easy hike, with minimal elevation gain. Great for new hikers or those who just prefer easier trails! I am recovering from two abdominal surgeries in the last 7 months, so I am not in a hurry. We will hike as a group and no one will be left behind. Make sure your camera is fully charged- this is a gorgeous hike with lots of history and fun things to see!

There is plenty of parking at the trailhead (no pass required). The Lake Stevens Transit Center is only about 25 minutes away and a good spot to pick up for carpooling. Please let me know if you need a ride below. I can fit three passengers comfortably.

We can plan to grab a bite to eat in Granite Falls or Lake Stevens after the hike, for those who are interested!

If you are a registered member and have your punch card, don’t forget to bring it so I can initial it!
If you’re not a registered member, you’re more than welcome to attend anyway! You can find out more about how to become one and get a punch card of your own here: https://girls-who-hike.myshopify.com/products/gwh-new-member-kit

Gear— as this is a winter hike, you must pack microspikes and/or snowshoes, extra gloves, snacks, extra socks, and one more layer for your upper body than you think you’ll need.

If we have sufficient daylight and motivation, we can check out the path to Black Bear Mountain (6.2 miles R/T) and earn our winter Fulton Chain Trifecta Winter Patch.

Washington - Wallace Falls

This Hike is led by GWH Ambassador, Carolynn!
I'm one of your new ambassadors for 2019. I started hiking when I was in college and have used it as a tool to help me in my weight loss journey (70 pounds down so far!). I love introducing people to hiking and want to encourage anyone who is hesitant to get outside to just come. It's incredibly rewarding! And if you're a novice and experienced hiker, please come too!

I will not be handing out punch cards at this event. They’re available through purchase of a New Member Kit only.

Wallace Falls - Meet at the Wallace Falls parking lot
Trail Rating: YELLOW: Moderate hike, well-signed, elevation gain of between 1,000-2,000ft., low altitude. Novice hikers welcome! 3L of water required.

Date: Saturday, January 12, 2019
Time: Meet at the parking lot by 9AM

Distance: 5.6 miles roundtrip to upper falls and back, 4.4 miles to the picnic outlook (best views and popular turnaround point)
Elevation Gain: 1,300 feet (highest point 1,500 feet)
AllTrails Track: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/washington/wallace-falls-trail

Water Required: Yes, 2-3L minimum, per person/animal
Gear: No special gear needed, but a good pair of shoes with traction is ideal. It will likely be cool and wet, so warm clothing (no cotton), rain jacket, and an extra pair of socks will be a good idea.
Other: You might want to bring some snacks to munch on when we get to the middle falls outlook; we'll stop here for a bit.

Dogs: Yes, must be on leash. May not be suitable for pups

Permits / Passes: Discover Pass - you can purchase one at the parking lot if you don't have one already
Trailhead Coordinates / Address: Co-ordinates: 47.8669, -121.6780
Proceeding from Everett on Hwy 2, approach the city of Gold Bar. Turn left onto 1st Street, then drive .4 miles and take a right onto May Creek Rd (there will be Wallace Falls signage for both turns).

Snake your way up May Creek Rd for 1.3 miles until you reach a Y-junction. Right will take you into Camp Huston, so proceed left and drive up a short path into the Wallace Falls State Park parking lot.

Please do not park along the road that accesses the parking area for Wallace Falls State Park. You can search Google Maps for "Wallace Falls Parking Lot" and it should pop up.
Kids: If you are confident in their ability to hike on a trail of this magnitute, they are welcome! *See pacing below
Men: If you must! ;)

Pacing: I tend to move continuously, but at a slow to moderate pace in order to stop for sips of water, snacks, and of course taking photos. We will stay together as a group for this hike, so pacing will be determined as a group! Ideally we should be done by noon.

*This is a turtle hike, we will go slow and take as many breaks as needed. This will be a great hike for those just getting into hiking or those who hike at a slower pace.

**If you bring a dog, please bring enough water to keep him/her hydrated!

Your dog needs 1.5 -1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight over the course of a 12-hour day.
Math is hard and I hate it, but in this case, it’s absolutely worth it. I use 1.5 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is under 70 degrees, and 1.7 oz. of water per pound of body weight if the weather is over 70 degrees.

The formula to use here is: [(weight of dog x 1.5 oz.) / 12 hours] x the hours you will be hiking.

Confused? Same. Here it is step by step with my dog’s stats:

6 lbs. x 1.5 oz. = 9 oz.
9 oz. / 12 = .75 oz. per hour
So, if I’m hiking for 4 hours in cooler weather, my dog will need 3 oz. of water.

Looking forward to leading my first GWHAZ of 2019! This is a long hike so please make sure you are reviewing the details and asking questions prior to the hike. The White Tanks describes this as a "Double Black Diamond" which could mean some way finding or a little boulder scrambling.

We will meet at the TRAILHEAD STAGING AREA off of Wildlife Way. Hopefully we can drop a car at the Goat Camp trailhead (off of Black Canyon Road) to decrease the walking distance (more on this when I have confirmed people).

Please bring PLENTY of water and snacks/food as depending on our pace this hike could take upwards of 6 hours. If you have ANY questions, feel free to message me directly!!
